The Mind Set Engage team is proud to be delivering Ahead of the Game an evidence-based mental fitness programme developed by Movember, to rugby communities across Aotearoa. This marks a major step forward in our commitment to strengthening the mental wellbeing of young people through sport.
Originally piloted in six schools across the motu, the programme is now being rolled out nationally thanks to a $1 million investment from Movember over the next three years. As part of NZ Rugby’s broader Mind Set Engage framework, Ahead of the Game will run in schools throughout the country reaching players aged 14-18 as well as their coaches and caregivers.
Delivered by our experienced facilitators, the workshops focus on helping young people build mental fitness, recognise when they or their mates might be struggling, and develop the confidence to have supportive conversations. The programme also supports coaches and parents with tailored sessions to strengthen the circle of support around young players, building healthier environments both on and off the field.
NZ Rugby’s Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing, Dr Nathan Price, says Ahead of the Game fits perfectly within rugby’s unique ability to bring communities together and create change. “The feedback from our pilot showed that young people want this kind of learning in their rugby spaces—and that it works. We saw real increases in mental health literacy, help-seeking behaviour, and the confidence to support others.”
The content is engaging, interactive, and designed to meet young people where they are. By integrating the programme into the rhythms of rugby season and school life, the Mind Set Engage team ensures that mental wellbeing becomes part of the kaupapa - not just a one-off session.
As always, our mission remains simple: to build stronger, more connected communities where players, coaches, and whānau feel equipped and empowered to support one another. Ahead of the Game is another powerful tool to help us do just that.
